ReJoyce!
06/12/009
These days we're doing more and more things from home. So wouldn't it be great if some patients could do their therapy there?
Dr. Arthur Prochazka and his research group have developed an in-home tele-rehabilitation system called ReJoyce. Using something called Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES), this system enables people to perform manual therapeutic tasks of varying degrees of difficulty at home. FES is used to activate partially paralyzed muscles and, along with daily hand exercises, results in significant improvement in hand function over several weeks.
The movements are quantified by sensors used to control computer games. This makes the exercises enjoyable and engaging and also motivates users to persist with their therapy longer.
Exercise sessions can be supervised over the internet by remote therapists. The therapist can see the user and the user's screen, and can provide encouragement and advice. In addition, the therapist is able to choose games and adjust their difficulty according to the user's abilities.
The Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital is working with Dr. Prochazka and his team to provide this important modality to our patients.
